I've just read The Watchmen and I'm stuck with this one question: What does the smiley face symbolize?
It can't symbolize The Comedian because that's just stupid. It had to symbolize something for him to wear it. Just like how, in The Catcher in the Rye, Holden's red hat didn't symbolize Holden.
It symbolizes the simplistic and the recognizable; innocence.
When it becomes stained with blood it becomes a symbol for Watchmen itself; and "heroes" that wear ridiculous costumes and yet have so much darkness buried deep within.
