My cheerful narrowboat was tied to a tree, whilst I sorted out the usual weed aroung the prop.
I highly grumpy fisherman had a go at me.
I dismay, and tried to point out that the Inland Waterways were built with a lot of effort to improve transportation, not the fish stock you & others have bunged in.
He was indignant, & felt like throwing the beggar in.
Great big carbon fibre rods, they sit on the towpath side, blocking up folks on a stroll, and I get abuse for using a fully licenced boat, as the twits have to lift their rods in salute.
Sorry "Anglers" or whatever you call yourselves, but next time I get "Hey, we are in a competition to catch a carp" I shall turn off the engine in their midst.
What to do ?
I shall also put the bilge pump on, and hoot the hooter.
If you want to sit looking miserable all day, anarack, umbrella, thermos, upon a transport system, it is not my prob.

It's like that anywhere you go, Bob.
Over here on my side of the Atlantic, you have mom & pop who haven't yet figured out that a "boat ramp" is for launching & retrieving boats, and a "boat dock" is for docking boats, and will set out their array of rods any old place. I've even seen young children and toddlers swimming on active boat ramps, if you can believe it.
On the other hand, some "overly festive" individual has actually invented a boat whose main purpose is to A> throw off as big a wake as possible and B> blast stereo tunes as loud as possible. Ok, that's two main purposes, but you get what I mean. It's called a "wake-board boat."
Any rate, we have here what we call "rules of the road" that apply to inland waters, which are an attempt to separate the disparate groups of boaters and non-boaters. Trick is, to get the appropriate law enforcement personnel where you need 'em, and when.
Now, where I boat, the lakes are plenty big enough that I can go somewhere else to escape the bedlam if it gets to be too much, which obviously, you really can't. And of course, as a boating fisherman, I do what I can to avoid encroaching on a landlocked angler.
But on the rare occasion when I fish in a narrow waterway used by boat traffic, it's with the understanding that boats will pass, and I don't impede their progress. (Or make rude comments either, unless they deserve it.)
I'll just throw this out there, in case you find it helpful: not all anglers are as tolerant as me when it comes to intentional disruptions of their fishing activity; I've seen 2 oz lead lures with large treble hooks launched toward offending boaters, and lines cast intentionally into their path with the hope of destroying propshaft seals with a nice thick layer of monofiliment.
