Lee what you're looking for is to join a Navy VBSS. That is the US Navy's comparable bilet to a USCG Ledet. It will be similary competitive.
Also be advised Navy VBSS have to operate under Admiralty Law or SROE, where as USCG operates under 14 USC 89s (USCG can operate under Admiralty or SROE).
14 USC 89s give the USCG the ability to perform Federal LE on US Citizens or in US Terr. Waters. The Navy VBSS teams can only do boardings under Admiralty or SROE. They can participate in boardings on US flagged vessels only under USCG control.
