how does the shell oil do work as an oligopoly model?
Not sure quite what you are asking but the key is the barrier to entry into their market. Joe may set up a garage to compete with Charley but Joe would be unlikely to set up oil and gas fields and the necessary infrastructure to compete with Shell.
Hence they are not a monopoly ie Exxon competes but an oligopoly because of the barriers of entry to their market.
