dungeons and dragons? paint to use?
what is the best paint to use for the miniatures, the metal ones especially ? what about the plastic? now the pewter?
what brand name also?
Okay. It's a little more than you're asking but it's things I wish someone had told me in the beginning.
When you get your miniatures, remove the flash and wash them. The mold release used when casting does affect painting. Just use a little liquid soap and an old toothbrush. Rinse REALLY well.
I prefer a spray primer. I use Armory; it's sold at my local game store. It's just as good as GW and cheaper. Most brands are similar. Use black if you want darker, duller color affect, white if you want bright colors, and gray for neutral. You can also buy other color primers, but I don't care for those. They're good if you're painting an army and don't want to spend time on each model.
For paint, I prefer Citadel. The downside is it dries out quicker due to the container so close it when you can. Shake it often. I'm starting to use more Vallejo. I don't care for the fact you need to pour it out but that's because I always seem to pour more than I can use before it dries. Both are actually similar in color intensity and ease of use.
I highly recommend you learn to ink right away. It makes a HUGE difference in how your painting abilities are perceived. And take the time to highlight, even if you only highlight up one or two levels.
Seal with a nice satin sealer. Again, I prefer spray just because it's SO easy. Brand isn't too important. If you'll be touching these a lot, you'll want to reseal from time to time.
Good luck!
