Which latin dictators did John Paul II confront?
I remember vaguely from a history class that John Paul II stood up to some dictators, and there was one particular case when he did so very dramatically.
Can anyone tell me the names involved so I can look up more about it?
His most notable meeting was with Fidel Castro but the meeting of the two old man was of a strange harmony. Both amongst the longest ruling leaders of their country. Both with somewhat similar personal background. Both in their way great minds, both well read and both ruling as the infailable leader to their people. The comunistic leader wellcomed the pope with all honours of the protocoll. Something that would have been unthinkable only a decade before.
Also well known is his "This haiti must change" sermon in haiti. Preaching against the injustice done by the rich to the poor.
Also famous his visit to Chile, Uruquay and Argentinia when they were at the point of changing from dictatorship to democraty. It is said that he heavily pushed this developement.
