How to i get the skin off my deer's head?
i shot a deer like 2 weeks ago(3x5 buck) and i have cut the skull cap off and have been waiting until i got a plaque, now i have a plaque and i cant get the rest of the skin off. i have pliers and a knife and have tried soaking it in water but it didn't work. i need a way to get it all off fast. Help!
There are two good ways. The first is to put it in a large pot and boil and just let the water simmer and change the water every five or six hours. When you change the water take a knife and just keep trying to scrape the meat off the skull. If you want to do something fancy with it, you will want to strain the water that you pour out. The reason for this is that sometime teeth will fall out, if that happens just glue them back in after the skull is done. Farther along in the process the bottom jaw will fall off because it it held on by muscle. The jaw is easily reattached by wire of fishing line. The second way to clean the skull is a little easier. You just find some place to buy maggots and put them in an old cooler with the skull. If you cant find a place to get maggots just put the skull outside in a wire cage or something that birds or squirrels cant get into. The maggots will find it and collect on it, than you just get a pair of gloves and pick it up with the maggots on it and put it in a cooler and come back in a few days and the skull will be pretty much clean off, but you might want to still boil it a little to kill all the bugs. What ever method you use you will need to bleach it after all the meat if off the bone.
