Is the limited amount of mercury in a thermometer enough to cause mercury poisoning?
My cat knocked over my thermometer which I believe is mercury filled while I was at work. The thermometer broke and the mercury is gone. Maybe my cat licked it up. Is the limited amount of mercury in a thermometer enough to cause mercury poisoning (in me or my cat) if breathed in or ingested?
"The typical "fever thermometer" contains between 0.5 to 3 g (.3 to 1.7 dr) of elemental mercury.[1] Swallowing this amount of mercury would, it is said, pose little danger but the inhaling of the vapour could lead to health problems."
Make sure that the room the thermometer broke in is well ventilated and wear gloves to clean up the spill and wash your hands afterwards. Get the cat checked out by a vet if you are still concerned.
