I live in Alaska. Alaska is twice the size of Texas - three times if you measure it before and after the tide is out. You cannot travel by jet plane from the eastern part to the western part in one day. You cannot travel from the southern part to the northern part by jet plane in one day. Travel here is extremely expensive and there is no place in the lower 48 that can be compaired. Some cities - like Juneau, the captital - you cannot land in due to fog or storms for days on end and become stuck in either Sitka or Ketchikan. Image how much your travel would be if your flight to New York City was routinely diverted to Boston?
I am one of the few people who have traveled all over the state. I would travel with 2 to 3 other technicians. Helicopters rent for $3800 hour wet and $1200 dry time. If we could travel and stay under $52,000 in one week - we were doing good.
Bottom line. You think $43K is allot of money. In your state - it probably is since you can drive. But when you live in Alaska - a big place - everything is done by aircraft. Who hasthe time to spend 4-5 days driving from one place to another?
You are an ill informed individual. Up here we call them idiots. Please stop getting your news from CNN or NBC - try Fox News - they are more balanced. And go buy a map with a good scale and educate yourself.
